Artist Talk: Todd Gray in conversation with Kenyatta A.C. Hinkle

MoAD is pleased to present an evening with Todd Gray in an intimate conversation with fellow artist Kenyatta A.C. Hinkle. In this program, Gray allows greater insight into his past and how his specific positionality growing up in Los Angeles, amid rock and pop icons, provided a framework to grapple with the implications of mental colonialism. In recognition of homogeneity and dominant culture, Gray has set out to question, problematize, and recontextualize the act of viewing in his artistic practice. This program will include a wine reception, and is presented in conjunction with the exhibition Todd Gray: My Life in the Bush with MJ & Iggy.
Todd Gray lives and works in Los Angeles and Ghana. He received both his BFA and MFA from the California Institute of theArts. He is Professor Emeritus, School of Art, California State University, Long Beach. Recent solo and group exhibitions include the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, Luckman Gallery, Cal State University, Los Angeles, Studio Museum, Harlem, NY, USC Fisher Museum of Art, Los Angeles, California African American Museum, Los Angeles, Tucson Museum of Art, Detroit Museum of Art, Renaissance Society, University of Chicago among others. Performance works have been presented at institutions such as the Roy & Edna Disney Cal/Arts Theater, REDCAT, Los Angeles, Armory Center for the Arts, Pasadena, and the Japanese American National Museum, Los Angeles. He was the recipient of a Rockefeller Foundation Grant in 2016.
Kenyatta A.C. Hinkle lives and works in Los Angeles. Her work was recently on view at MoAD in the exhibition, Who Among Us… The Art of Kenyatta A.C. Hinkle. Her exhibition The Evanesced is currently on view at the California African American Museum in Los Angeles. Hinkle is an American artist who focuses on questions of race, sexuality, and history through a variety of visual and textual mediums.
