Allegedly the French artist Daniel Buren never says no to an invitation for an exhibition, unless the conditions are bad. A large part of the artist’s role in today’s professionalized art system is being present. Every opportunity needs to be seized, every chance taken. But what makes conditions 'bad'? When and why can an artist justifiably refuse to participate? This small exhibition brings together different works, stories and rumours of artists that no longer wished to take part. They turned invitations down, decided to step out for a moment or withdrew completely.
With works from Bas Jan Ader, Maurizio Cattelan, Thierry De Cordier, Marcel Duchamp, David Hammons, Jef Geys, Cady Noland, Panamarenko, Laurie Parsons and Charlotte Posenenske.
Exhibition coordinated by Lode Geens for Nick Lodgers.
